CAMDEN’S FESTIVAL OF DANCE AND SUMMER INTENSIVE

Camden's Festival of Dance and Summer Intensive at the Walter K. Gordon Theatre, Rutgers University

That Which Connects is a platform for dance companies in the City of Camden, as well as the larger Delaware Valley, to celebrate their artistry as well as become a part of the reemerging arts community in Camden.

That Which Connects provides the established artist that wants to challenge themselves an opportunity to present their work, while expanding and strengthening their voice.

That Which Connects further exposes the emerging artist with the opportunity to perform their works in an environment that inspires growth and inclusion in a professional quality performance environment. The merging of established and emerging choreographic works brings a fervent energy to the stage.

That Which Connects is a dance festival committed to sparking ingenuity and innovation, while bolstering Camden's creative spirit.  The festival invites emerging and established professional dance companies to submit finished works that exemplify the highest level of artistry.

That Which Connects through its three day intensive for pre-professional young dancers is bridging the gap between young artists and highly respected professionals.  Technical training, artistic exploration, and performance opportunities are the three immensely powerful experiences that will be gained by attending these three intense days of training and rehearsing, culminating in performing with pre-professional and professional dance companies throughout the Delaware Valley.

That Which Connects is based on the philosophy of Introspective Movement Project, the professional dance company presenting these 4 incredibly life inspiring days.  As Introspective Movement Project attempts to do in all of its artistic pieces, this festival is committed to defying limitations and restrictions placed on movement, while inspiring soul inspired self-exploration.

OUR MISSION

Our goal is to contribute to the revitalization of the city by making the festival an annual event that attracts hundreds of dance lovers from the Tri-State area. Our mission is twofold and designed to:

  • Present a signature event that builds upon and strengthens Camden’s cultural community
  • Celebrates Camden’s significant dance legacy through educational and collaborative opportunities

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

That Which Connects, Camden’s Festival of Dance debuted in December of 2015 with two stellar performances, over 8 companies performing, and hundreds of art enthusiasts in attendance.  The Festival was initially birthed as a result of Introspective Movement Project's original work "That Which Connects", an eight minute contemporary jazz dance piece that embodied the invisible spirit that connects and moves every aspect of every person that  is so blessed to take a breath each and every day. The festival is once again purposed to speak volumes to the powerful spirit of all artistic forms to bridge gaps and to speak the universal language that does not have to be spoken in order to be heard.  As dance is a language that affects each of our five senses, Introspective Movement Project designed this festival to expand, educate and evaluate the artistic experience, which inexplicably and unequivocally spills over into day-to-day life.

With the announcement of the influx of billions of dollars into Camden through a multifaceted redevelopment plan, That Which Connects is invested in being part of the integral root system that embeds and intertwines the arts with rebuilding and revitalizing Camden's community.  This annual festival is just the tip of the iceberg of its commitment to investing in the arts long term.  By representing the arts in its entirety,  the festival hopes to be one of the critical components in empowering businesses, citizens and local organizations to invest in breathing new life and strength to the pulse of Camden. This festival is committed to investing in people “capital” and emphasizing the value of supporting the growth of arts organizations.

ABOUT THE SUMMER INTENSIVE

That which Connects realizes the importance in investing in the next generation of artists, not simply in words but in deeds.  Experiential learning is foremost in arts education, integrating what is learned within the confines of a dance studio with the wealth of experience only derived from being on stage.  The opportunity for a young dancer to be inspired, encouraged, nurtured and groomed by professionals that don’t want to just share their art but want to encourage another’s journey, is sure to be life changing.  This three day intensive will introduce advanced training in ballet, jazz, tap, modern, contemporary, musical theatre, and hip hop as well as take the necessary departure to encourage self reflection, goal setting, and introspective discovery.  From 9am-3pm, Wednesday through Friday, dancers will engage in technical instruction in these aforementioned disciplines, thereafter; they will experience a taste of the professional world.  Artistic Director, Sonia James Pennington, will set a repertoire piece and one original work on these young artists to be performed during the festival.  These young artist will share the stage with the very professionals that they studied with throughout the week, no longer spectators to professional quality performances.

Pre-professional dancers, ages 13-18, who are interested in attending should email thatwhichconnectscamden@gmail.com to request an application.  The Registration Fee is $250.00 for the 3-day intensive but scholarships based on financial need will be generously awarded, and therefore, those with a financial inability to pay should not deem the registration fee as a deterrent to applying, but are highly encouraged to apply.  Submission of video footage of the applicant during a performance, rehearsal, or class instruction will be required when submitting application.  Acceptance into the program is ongoing,  but those accepted into the Intensive will be notified no later than May 1, 2017.   Scholarships recipients will be notified upon acceptance.

ABOUT INTROSPECTIVE MOVEMENT PROJECT

Introspective Movement Project is a contemporary jazz dance company in its fifth touring season, whose sole purpose is defying limitations and restrictions placed on movement, while inspiring soul inspired self-exploration, under the artistic direction of Sonia James Pennington.  More than two decades ago, Sonia James Pennington began her career as a dance educator while earning her bachelor’s degree in Political Science and African American Studies at Rutgers University.  Sonia fell in love with teaching and choreographing and continued on this path while earning her Juris Doctorate from Temple University’s Beasley School of Law. Juggling practicing law as a Deputy Attorney General for the State of New Jersey in the Civil Insurance Fraud Division, while still teaching and choreographing, Sonia began her dance entrepreneur journey.  In 2003, she co-founded National Dance Showcase, a talent competition that produces showcases along the East Coast with its main objective of encouraging the growth of young  talent by providing performance opportunities in a competitive environment with constructive feedback and professional critiques.  It is now in its 14th season of competition.  Sonia is also the co-owner of Artists In Motion Performing Arts Center, wherein she has had the opportunity to share her love and passion for dance to dancers ranging in ages 2-18 since 2008.  Because of her dedication to work with young artists, Sonia was recognized by channel 6abc Community Advisory Board , the City Council for the City of Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for her outstanding mentorship and for empowering today’s youth through the arts.

Introspective Movement Project’s pieces are committed to telling stories that fully incorporate life experiences through organic, athletic, emotion-evoking choreography, which inspire artistic works that fuse movement with limitless boundaries and technical prowess.  Dancers are committed to being totally in the moment, to becoming musical instruments, and to letting go so their bodies speak an instinctual language that needs no translation. Sonia Pennington's organic choreography, routed in contemporary jazz, has been recognized for its strength, athleticism and emotional connection.  Such works are a result of a culmination of many diverse life experiences.   Introspective Movement Project’s most notable works are “Phenomenally Rising: The Fruits of the Dreams of Men” and “That Which Connects. “Phenomenally Rising: The Fruits of the Dreams of Men” is a dedication to the life work of Maya Angelou whose personal journey demonstrated the undeniable strength of the human spirit to overcome the mental, physical, and spiritual hold of “isms”, by declaring the power of resilience, by defining one’s self, by learning one’s history, and by having the courage to be noticed despite these limiting forces, which was performed at the 2014 Koresh Come Together Festival.   “That Which Connects” has been performed extensively during the companies 2015 touring season, such as Ryder University’s Emerging Choreographers Showcase and the Brooklyn Dance Festival. “That Which Connects” is an eight minute long contemporary dance piece that embodies the invisible spirit that connects each human on both subconscious and conscious levels, a universal connection so deep that although not seen is the bond connecting all mankind.  “That Which Connects” is the inspiration for That Which Connects, Camden’s Festival of Dance, which is Artistic Director’s, Sonia Pennington’s,  newest endeavor to create an opportunity for established and emerging choreographers to come together to present works that further bolster the strong arts community in and surrounding the City of Camden.  Introspective Movement Company’s other performance highlights include:  The Koresh Come Together Dance Festival, Kun-Yang Lin InHale Performance Series, The Brooklyn Dance Festival, Emerging Choreographers Performance Series, WaWa Welcome America!, Prince Music Theater, The Performance Garage, African American Museum in Philadelphia, Koresh Artist Showcases, Fringe Arts, The 6abc Thanksgiving parade, the American Heart Association annual Go Red for Women Campaign, the Mayor of Philadelphia's Christmas Tree Lighting, the State of New Jersey Amistad Commission’s Teacher Summit, and other performances for charitable groups such as Jack & Jill of America
